Driver arrested after allegedly causing Mariental power outage


A 28 – year – old man has been arrested following a vehicle accident on Thursday in the Takarania informal settlement at Mariental which caused a power outage . The incident occurred around 07h00 and involved a collision with the main NamPower electricity supply line , resulting in a full – day power outage across Mariental . This was confirmed by Chief Inspector Charles Goagoseb of the Namibian Police at Mariental . In an interview with Nampa on Friday , Chief Inspector Goagoseb confirmed that the suspect has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol ; reckless driving , and driving without a licence . The driver was apprehended shortly after the incident . ‘ The suspect was arrested soon after the incident when it became clear that he was driving under the influence and did not possess a valid driving licence ,’ Goagoseb stated . According to Goagoseb , the suspect was behind the wheel of a family member ‘ s car while intoxicated . The power outage affected Mariental as well as neighbouring
towns , including Gibeon , Maltah ö he , Asab , and various farms along the Maltah ö he roads . Electricity was only restored at approximately 18h00 on Thursday . Fortunately , there were no fatalities , and only minor injuries were reported , Goagoseb said . The suspect remains in police custody while the investigation is ongoing
