Durban:The eThekwini Municipality is advancing plans to establish Durban as a premier African destination for superyachts and a service hub. The city is set to host the first African edition of the Yachting Aftersales and Refit Experience (YARE) On Tour Symposium in November 2026.
According to South African Government News Agency, the KwaZulu-Natal Superyacht Marina is part of a R1.9 billion investment pipeline, expected to generate over 2,500 direct jobs by 2030. This project is a key element of the Durban Bay Waterfront development, aiming to position the city as a gateway to Africa on a new superyacht route from the Mediterranean to Africa's eastern seaboard.
A proposed superyacht precinct will cover a 24-hectare area within the Port of Durban. eThekwini City Manager Musa Mbhele stated that the project encompasses industrial development, skills transfer, and economic growth, beyond just tourism. Mbhele emphasized that partnering with global entities like Navigo is vital in leveraging Durban's maritime heritage into a significant economic driver.
The municipality collaborates with Italy-based Navigo, associated with the YARE programme, to push forward the private-sector investment. Mbhele highlighted that the project's employment objectives complement the Transnet National Ports Authority's ship repair strategy, projected to support over 25,000 jobs in the sector.
Significant economic benefits are anticipated from superyacht visits, including expenditure on fuel, maintenance, and tourism services. Visits by superyachts could potentially generate about R100 million annually in fuel sales alone, with Navigo committed to facilitating ten or more superyacht visits to Durban each year starting in 2028.
Key developments include a letter of intent signed with Navigo in March 2026 and a three-year partnership approved in July. Durban engaged global industry leaders at the Monaco Yacht Show and participated in discussions on the blue economy at the African Boating Conference.
The initiative supports national and provincial ocean economy priorities and complements the TNPA's Ship Repair and Manufacturing Plan. The eThekwini Municipality encourages investors and maritime businesses to engage with the programme ahead of the November symposium.
