E-Hailing App Providers Urged to Register with Transport Department

Pretoria: E-hailing app providers working with operators in Gauteng are being urged to register their applications in accordance with Section 66(A) of the National Land Transport Amendment Act, 2009 (Act No. 5 of 2009). This step is mandatory for engaging in any operating licensing processes at the provincial level.

According to South African Government News Agency, the National Department of Transport (NDoT) requires e-hailing platform providers to register their digital applications with the National Public Transport Regulator (NPTR). This directive is part of the department's broader effort to implement the amended National Land Transport Amendment Act (NLTA) and new e-hailing regulations. The aim is to ensure alignment between national and provincial frameworks, promoting a safe, accessible, transparent, and compliant public transport environment across Gauteng.

In a statement, MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela emphasized the importance of operators working with the government. She highlighted the significant growth of the e-hailing service in Gauteng, noting its valuable mobility options and economic opportunities for thousands of operators. However, she stressed that this growth should occur within a transparent and well-regulated environment to protect both operators and commuters.

Diale-Tlabela called on all app companies operating in Gauteng to submit their registration and help build an accountable, efficient, and lawful public transport system. Providers should visit the National Department of Transport's office at 159 Struben Street, Forum Building, Pretoria, to register their digital applications.

The department added that it is in the interest of all app providers and e-hailing operators to register and finalize all other legislated requirements, including voluntary agreements. This will enable the Gauteng Provincial Regulatory Entity (GPRE) to start receiving and deciding on their applications for operating licenses. The GPRE plans to convene meetings across the province to provide more details, ensuring that app providers and e-hailing operators fully understand what is required and are able to comply.
