Kranskop: While statistics of fatalities and crashes for the Easter Season Road Safety campaign are still undergoing quality assurance and verification, Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, says early indications are showing a significant decrease in all provinces, with the exception of Mpumalanga. Providing an update for the 2025 Easter Season Road Safety Arrive Alive campaign on Sunday, the Minister said the public has responded positively to the campaign.
According to South African Government News Agency, since the 20th of March 2025, authorities have stopped 782,000 vehicles and issued 116,000 fines. A total of 3,500 drivers were arrested for offenses, and 89 pedestrians were taken into custody for walking on highways. Furthermore, 2,200 unroadworthy vehicles were prevented from continuing their journey, the Minister reported during a briefing in Kranskop, Limpopo.
The Minister emphasized that the government will not permit pedestrians on highways, citing the danger it poses to both themselves and vehicle occupants. She also praised traffic law enforcement officers for their dedication, expressing confidence that their actions are contributing to saving lives on the roads.
Last month, the government launched the 2025 Easter Season Road Safety Arrive Alive campaign, which began on 20 March and will run until 2 May 2025, under the theme “It begins with Me.” The campaign aims to reduce road fatalities during the high-traffic holiday period through integrated law enforcement and public education.
Meanwhile, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported that three motorists were arrested in Limpopo for attempting to bribe traffic officers over the weekend. The RTMC commended the officers for their integrity and reiterated that road safety is non-negotiable. The corporation also noted that traffic officers are conducting heightened drunk driving operations over the weekend, as history shows an increase in such incidents during this period.
