ECN impressed with high voter registration numbers

WINDHOEK: The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has said it is impressed with the rising number of members of the public registering to vote in the upcoming national elections slated for 27 November.

ECN Spokesperson De Wet Siluka in an interview with Nampa said Namibians flocked to registration centres countrywide to register and obtain their voters’ cards on Thursday.

‘On Thursday, we observed long queues at registration centres across the country and we are quite impressed. This just shows that Namibians are eager to participate in the democratic process of voting,’ he said.

With the deadline set for Thursday, the number of registered Namibians, Siluka said, is expected to increase from the 1 315 124 recorded on Monday. This, he said in a statement on Monday, included eligible Namibians at all Namibian diplomatic missions abroad.

This represents 81 per cent of eligible voters and an average of 26 869 people register to vote per day, he said.

According to Siluka, the final statistics will be releas
ed on Friday.

He further reminded Namibians that there is no window of opportunity for extending the voter registration period after its deadline of 01 August 2024.

The general registration of voters started on 03 June 2024.
