Elon Musk’s Political Odyssey: From Backing Trump to Forming a New Party

Berlin: Elon Musk, the world's richest man, has found himself at the center of political discourse over the past year, following his endorsement of Donald Trump for the US presidency in the 2024 election. Musk, known for his ventures in technology and space exploration, has become an influential figure on the political right, even as his public approval has waned amid controversies.

According to Deutsche Welle, Musk's endorsement of Trump marked a significant shift in his political involvement. Despite previously identifying as a moderate with a history of bipartisan contributions, Musk invested over $119 million in a political action committee, "America PAC," and contributed over $290 million to Republican candidates during the 2023-24 election cycle. This financial commitment solidified his position as a key supporter of Trump, aligning him with the far-right political agenda.

Musk's political influence extended beyond the United States, as he voiced support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party during Germany's election season. His endorsements and controversial gestures, which some compared to a Nazi salute, sparked protests and vandalism of Tesla properties across Europe, highlighting the divisive nature of his political stance.

In the United States, Musk's role as a special advisor to President Trump led to the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), aimed at reducing government spending. However, the initiative faced backlash as it targeted essential services, including USAID and Social Security, contributing to Musk's declining popularity.

The relationship between Musk and Trump eventually soured, culminating in Musk's departure from his advisory role in May. Disagreements over Trump's policies, including changes to migrant visas and a tax and spending bill, strained their alliance. Musk's criticism of the bill and resurfacing of controversial posts further distanced him from the Trump administration.

Despite these setbacks, Musk remains politically active. He has announced the formation of the "America Party," challenging the two-party system that has dominated US politics for over a century. While ineligible to run for president due to his South African birth, Musk could seek lower office or influence policy through his wealth. He has already pledged support for Congressman Thomas Massie's reelection campaign, signaling his continued engagement in shaping American politics.
