Eskom and Exxaro Collaborate on Carbon Emission Reduction Initiatives

Pretoria: Exxaro Resources and Eskom have taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing carbon emissions, enhancing air quality, and facilitating the Just Transition.

According to South African Government News Agency, this collaboration aligns with South Africa’s commitment to the Paris Agreement, international environmental standards, and national regulatory frameworks. The agreement emphasizes the joint measurement, management, and reduction of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, with potential investments in innovative technologies to drive decarbonisation.

The initiative also focuses on inclusive transition strategies such as skills development, job creation in green sectors, and stakeholder engagement to ensure climate resilience. The MoU, signed on Monday, includes provisions for data sharing and transparent reporting to track progress and ensure accountability.

Exxaro Resources CEO, Ben Magara, expressed that this collaboration represents a critical advancement in the company’s commitment to a Just Transition and building a climate-resilient, low-carbon future. Magara highlighted the aim to leverage Exxaro’s expertise in diversified mining and energy solutions to drive innovation, reduce air pollution, and deliver socio-economic benefits to communities.

The initial focus will be identifying necessary investments and stakeholders to develop technology-based solutions for transitioning to a low-carbon economy, aligning with South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).

Eskom Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, reaffirmed the commitment to a sustainable energy future while ensuring a secure electricity supply. He noted that the initiative is part of Eskom’s strategy to explore advancements and reduce carbon emissions and air pollutants both locally and internationally.

Exxaro remains committed to its Sustainable Growth and Impact strategy by integrating key Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priorities into its operations. The company aims to become carbon-neutral by 2050 through partnerships like this one.

Meanwhile, Eskom’s Research, Testing, and Development (RT and D) business unit will lead the partnership. The unit focuses on technology solutions to enhance efficiency, improve emissions management, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the company.

Eskom continues to maintain a balanced energy mix, incorporating coal, nuclear, gas, renewables, and energy storage systems to sustainably meet South Africa’s growing electricity demand.
