Eskom Commended for Achieving Profit Before Tax for First Time Since 2017

Cape town: Parliament’s Select Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Mineral Resources has commended Eskom for achieving a profit before tax margin of approximately R23.9 billion for the 2025 financial year, marking the first profit turn since 2017. This achievement comes after the power utility posted a net loss before tax of about R25.5 billion in the previous year.

According to South African Government News Agency, the committee highlighted the importance of reinvesting the profit back into Eskom’s operations. This reinvestment is seen as essential for strengthening the utility’s infrastructure and ensuring greater energy security for the country, which is vital for economic growth and attracting investment, said committee chairperson Mpho Modise.

Despite the financial turnaround, Modise expressed concern over the growing municipal debt owed to Eskom, which has increased by 27% and currently stands at around R103.5 billion. He emphasized the need for addressing this issue and identifying a viable solution, stressing that public entities must be held accountable to meet their financial responsibilities.
