Eskom Suspends Loadshedding After Recovery of 3,000MW of Generation Capacity

Johannesburg: Eskom has announced the suspension of loadshedding following the recovery of over 3,000 megawatts of generation capacity and the successful replenishment of emergency reserves. The suspension took effect on Sunday at 10 am.

According to South African Government News Agency, coal operations at Kusile Power Station have reached optimal levels, with all previously offline units back in service. Eskom also reported progress in the recovery of Koeberg Unit 2, assuring the public of its safe status. Planned maintenance outages are ongoing to prepare for winter and adhere to regulatory and environmental licensing requirements.

The power utility aims to restore 4,091 megawatts back to service by Monday. Eskom’s Summer Outlook, published on August 26, 2024, remains unchanged, with claims that loadshedding is largely a thing of the past due to structural improvements in the generation fleet. Despite ongoing constraints in baseload capacity, Eskom’s generation recovery plan is addressing these challenges. The utility emphasized the dedication of its skilled staff and stated that further communication will be provided as necessary.
