JOHANNESBURG: The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) are intensifying their efforts to combat crime on the N1 highway following a rise in spiking incidents. The initiative aims to enhance road safety and protect motorists from deliberate acts of sabotage that have led to multiple accidents.
According to South African Government News Agency, the City of Johannesburg Department of Public Safety has issued a statement condemning the criminal activities on the N1 North between the Soweto Highway and Maraisburg Off-ramps, as well as the N1 South between Maraisburg and Rand Show Road Off-ramps. The statement highlights the use of rocks placed deliberately on the roads, resulting in accidents and posing a threat to motorists’ safety.
Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, expressed outrage over these actions, calling them an attack on the safety and dignity of residents. The statement detailed that joint operations by JMPD and SAPS are underway to eliminate these threats, with a particular focus on maintaining security during the festive season.
The statement also addressed reports alleging that JMPD officers failed to assist a motorist whose tires were spiked, leading to a near mugging incident. The Department of Public Safety emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards negligence or dereliction of duty, announcing an investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit to hold any guilty officers accountable.
Residents are encouraged to participate in safety efforts by reporting emergencies or suspicious activities via the provided contact numbers. The Department reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Johannesburg’s residents, emphasizing the importance of justice and accountability in maintaining public trust.
