Former Deputy President David Mabuza Passes Away at 65

Pretoria: President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his condolences to the family of former Deputy President David Dabede Mabuza who passed away on Thursday. Mabuza, who served as Deputy President between 2018 and 2023, died in a hospital at the age of 65.

According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa expressed his condolences to Mabuza’s family, including his wife and children. He extended his sympathies to Mabuza’s friends and the people of Mpumalanga, where Mabuza served as Premier from 2009 to 2018. President Ramaphosa also acknowledged Mabuza’s contributions to the African National Congress, where he was elected Deputy President in December 2017.

President Ramaphosa praised Mabuza’s contributions to the government, highlighting his leadership roles. As Deputy President, Mabuza was involved in leading government business in Parliament, the South African National Aids Council, and coordinating anti-poverty initiatives. He also represented South Africa on international platforms and chaired key Cabinet Committees.

Mabuza, known as DD or The Cat, was originally a teacher but became involved in political activism. President Ramaphosa emphasized Mabuza’s early engagement in activism and his leadership role in shaping South Africa’s international engagements. The President acknowledged Mabuza’s commitment to the liberation struggle and the nation’s development.
