Moscow: In early September, the Russian capital became the epicenter of global fashion, as Moscow Fashion Week captivated international audiences by showcasing an impressive array of talent from 13 countries. Among the distinguished designers was David Tlale, a renowned couturier from South Africa, who is no stranger to the Moscow runways. This season, Tlale aimed to convey an authentic African narrative through his sophisticated and powerful designs.
According to African Press Organization, Russian fashion brands are increasingly making their mark in Africa. Designers such as Solangel have participated in South Africa’s Soweto Fashion Week in 2024, while Darya Kipriyanova presented her collection at the Hub of Africa Fashion Week in 2025. These interactions highlight the strengthening ties between Africa and Russia, spanning various industries, including culture and fashion, and fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and inspiration.
Alongside Moscow Fashion Week, the BRICS+ Fashion Summit unfolded in the city, bringing together delegations from BRICS members South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia, along with representatives from other nations. Notable African attendees included Mmantlha Sankoloba, CEO of the Botswana Exporters and Manufacturers Association; Nana Tamakloe, CEO of Accra Fashion Week; Kalistu Ramos Mukoroli, Director of MTC Windhoek Fashion Week; and Brian James Kihindas, Director of the Kenya Fashion Council and Nairobi Fashion Week. The Summit provided a unique platform for African industry leaders to share expertise with their European, American, and Russian counterparts.
Brian James Kihindas expressed his aspirations for deepening global collaboration, particularly between African fashion ecosystems and emerging markets. He emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships that promote inclusive and equitable fashion systems, integrating African creatives and artisans into global value chains.
The appeal of African fashion in Moscow is undeniable, as it captivates audiences with its authenticity, boldness, and vibrancy. For Africa, Moscow Fashion Week serves as more than just an event; it is a gateway to international recognition, fostering cultural exchange and opening doors to global fashion markets.
