Johannesburg: Gauteng’s Forensic Social Worker, Captain Cynthia Ndwandwe, has become a beacon of hope for child victims of gender-based violence, with her quality work leading to twelve life terms for a sexual predator. Captain Ndwandwe’s dedication to justice for vulnerable members of society is a source of immense pride for the South African Police Service (SAPS).
According to South African Police Service, gender-based violence remains a significant challenge in the country. This year’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign emphasizes addressing the root causes of GBV, promoting positive masculinity and gender equity, and creating economic opportunities for women and children. It underscores the necessity of an all-of-society approach and multisector accountability in combatting GBV and femicide.
Ndwandwe, a qualified Forensic Social Worker with over two decades of experience, serves in the Katlehong Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit, specializin
g in crimes against children. Her notable achievement includes securing a 12 life imprisonment sentence for an offender who molested young boys aged eight to ten, finalised at the Palm Ridge High Court on 4 December 2023.
Employing rigorous and scientific investigative methods, such as the Michigan Protocol and forensic social work expertise, Ndwandwe ensures comprehensive evidence compilation for court-admissible arrests and convictions. Despite the emotional toll of such investigations, she remains committed to prioritising prevention, response, care, and support for victims.
Ndwandwe hopes her dedication and thorough work will deter potential offenders, reinforcing that crimes against children and the vulnerable will not go unpunished. She advocates for additional training to enhance detective services, particularly in GBV cases, by improving safeguarding and handling evidence, obtaining buccal samples, and offering statement-taking refresher courses and court preparation for child victims.
