Gauteng Legislature hosts dialogue to celebrate Africa Month, 31 May

On Wednesday, 31 May 2023, Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) Speaker, Honourable Ntombi Mekgwe, will host a dialogue themed: ‘Reflecting on the Progress and Potential of Africa – Taking Pride in the Continent’s Diversity’.

The event is planned as part of Africa Month Celebrations and provides a platform to reflect on progress made in deepening democracy on the African continent – in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals as well as responding to the fast-rising surge of cholera infections and deaths witnessed in the Continent. This will also serve as an opportune time to reflect on the diverse treasures and heritage comprised in the rich African continent.

Amongst some of the panelists are Ambassadors and High Commissioners representing various African countries, Members of the Pan African Parliament, Prof Mathole Motshekga as well as the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Hon. Amos Masondo.

The GPL will use this occasion to condemn xenophobic attacks and a general intolerance towards fellow African nationals by some individuals and groups among society. These acts sabotage the strides made by South Africa as a democratic country, and contradict what the Freedom Charter stipulates.

Through commemorating Africa month, the GPL also envisages inspiring traditional African beliefs of humanism among the people of Gauteng, where every individual has a right and responsibility to contribute to society and enrich the spirit of Ubuntu.

Details of the vent are as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 31 May 2023

Time: 10h00
