GNU Prioritizes Economic Growth and Anti-Corruption Efforts in South Africa

Kuala lumpur: The Government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa is actively pursuing a strategy to stimulate economic growth, reduce unemployment and poverty, and tackle corruption. This was emphasized by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his participation in a fireside discussion at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Business and Investment Summit in Malaysia.

According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa highlighted the collaborative nature of the GNU, formed following the country’s democratic elections in 2024. Despite its members coming from different political backgrounds, the GNU is reportedly functioning effectively. The President outlined three key priorities: boosting economic growth and job creation, addressing poverty, and establishing a capable and ethical state.

President Ramaphosa noted that with 32% of South Africans unemployed, economic growth and job creation are critical. He also stressed the importance of tackling poverty, which he attributed to the country’s colonial and apartheid past. Additionally, the President emphasized the need for a competent government to drive development and maintain ethical standards.

The President elaborated on the government’s reform agenda aimed at promoting economic growth, mentioning initiatives in logistics, ports, roads, and electricity. He stated that over a trillion Rand is being invested in infrastructure, alongside efforts to enhance local government operations where both people and investments are concentrated. These reforms are reportedly yielding positive results.

Addressing corruption, President Ramaphosa acknowledged its prevalence in both the public and private sectors. The GNU is focused on combating this criminality and reinforcing the rule of law, ensuring that essential indicators of progress are adequately aligned and targeted.
