Pretoria: With Banyana Banyana set to take on Morocco in the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-final match tonight, government is calling on all South Africans to continue supporting the senior women's national team.
According to South African Government News Agency, Acting Government Spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa emphasized the importance of national unity and pride in supporting the team. Mnukwa stated, "Government encourages all South Africans to unite behind the team and celebrate how far they have come. Their courage, determination and resilience have inspired the nation and demonstrated that South Africa can compete with the very best on the global stage."
The eagerly anticipated match is scheduled to commence at 10 pm, and the government is urging citizens to visibly show their support. Mnukwa encouraged South Africans to don Banyana Banyana jerseys, national colours, or other symbols of support, whether they are at home, at work, or in public spaces. She stressed the significance of rallying behind the National Women's team as they continue to make South Africa proud.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, also urged all South Africans to show their support for the team during this crucial match. Banyana Banyana secured their place in the quarter-finals after a victory over Burkina Faso, winning 1-0 in Casablanca, Morocco, on Tuesday night.
