Pretoria: Government has extended its congratulations to the Matric Class of 2024 for their outstanding performance in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
According to South African Government News Agency, the matriculants achieved a pass rate of 87.3%, surpassing the 82.9% recorded in 2023. This marks a notable improvement of 4.4%. The achievements of the Class of 2024 are attributed to the hard work and determination of learners, as well as the support they received from teachers, parents, guardians, and caregivers.
The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) highlighted that the 2024 results represent a significant milestone in South Africa’s educational history, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of democracy. In 1994, many learners faced challenges such as limited access to quality resources and infrastructure. Today, the Class of 2024 benefits from an education system that is more inclusive and better resourced.
The GCIS noted the challenges faced by the Class of 2024, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted learning worldwide. Despite these challenges, the matriculants demonstrated resilience and determination, emerging stronger as a result of collective efforts.
The government has prioritized creating an enabling learning environment by eradicating mud schools and pit latrine toilets, and providing quality classrooms. The Department of Basic Education aims to eliminate all remaining identified pit latrine toilets in schools by 31 March 2025. Efforts are also underway to improve school safety and security.
As the country celebrates the achievements of the Class of 2024, the GCIS emphasized the transformation in the education sector over the past 30 years. Access to education has expanded significantly, and the matric pass rate has steadily improved, reflecting progress in teaching and resource allocation.
President Cyril Ramaphosa praised the matric Class of 2024 for their exceptional achievements and highlighted their role in advancing South Africa’s basic education sector. He noted that their success is a testament to the nation’s progress during 30 Years of Freedom and Democracy and demonstrates the resilience and pride of the country’s youth.
