Mthatha: The Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) has expressed its deep disturbance over the recent increase in violent killings of traditional leaders in South Africa, following the tragic death of Eastern Cape traditional leader Nkosikazi Thenjiwe Eunice ‘Nogcinile’ Mtirara. The ministry extended condolences to the AmaDlomo royal clan, the AbaThembu Kingdom, and the affected families.

According to South African Government News Agency, the 71-year-old matriarch was shot dead in her royal home at Mqhekezweni Great Place, situated in the Bhityi administrative area outside Mthatha, on Tuesday night. President Cyril Ramaphosa also expressed his sorrow over the passing of the matriarch, condemning the attack as a merciless act against an elderly community leader. He emphasized the need to stop violent crime and ensure justice is served.

The Ministry also expressed sympathy for the five matric learners who were raped and robbed at gunpoint in the same area. These incidents undersco
re the high levels of crime, particularly femicide, affecting the nation. The Ministry highlighted the necessity for collective action to protect traditional leaders and combat gender-based violence, especially following a meeting between Their Majesties and the government focused on these issues.

CoGTA Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa called on law enforcement to thoroughly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. The government is committed to working with traditional leadership to ensure their safety, security, and the promotion of respect and dignity for all citizens.
