Pretoria: One person has been killed while others have been rushed to hospital following heavy rains that destroyed houses and roads in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to South African Government News Agency, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressed his condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with Madondo family following the unfortunate death of their family member. This is after the collapse of their house in P Section in Umlazi, Ward 85.” He further mentioned that local councilors and roving teams have reported many individuals being taken to hospitals and clinics due to the destruction of their homes.
The MEC announced an upcoming visit to the affected area scheduled for Friday, 25 April 2025. He noted that other areas in Umlazi, such as Chicago in AA Section, J Section, and Ward 78 near KwaMgaga High School, have also suffered significant damage, leaving many community members homeless.
“Our highly efficient team from Road Traffic Inspectorate has recorded an increase in the number of crashes. Roads have been flooded and bridges destroyed,” added the MEC in a social media post on Facebook, highlighting the extensive impact of the heavy rains on the region’s infrastructure.
