Heritage week celebrated at Keetmanshoop

The Keetmanshoop Municipality on Tuesday kicked off this year ‘ s Heritage Week under the theme ‘ Kultuur is Gemeenskap , Gemeenskap is Kultuur ‘ translating to culture is community and community is culture . Speaking here on Tuesday , Keetmanshoop Mayor , McDonald Hanse said while the theme reminds communities of the deep connections between culture and a sense of belonging , it is through shared traditions , language and values that strong communities are built . It is within such communities where culture thrives and evolves . Hanse added that it is important that culture and natural heritage are preserved for future generations . ‘ As we embark on this week ‘ s celebration , we must remember that our heritage is not just about the past , it is a living part of who we are today and it shapes the future we are building together . Throughout this week , let us embrace the opportunity to reflect on our history , celebrate our diversity and reaffirm our commitment to protecting and promoting the cultural and
natural resources that define us as Namibians ,’ said Hanse . || Kharas Governor , Aletha Frederick said while Namibia is home to a multitude of cultures , languages , and traditions , each tribe and community contribute uniquely to the national identity . ‘ It is essential that we appreciate this diversity not merely as a collection of differences but as a source of strength . Our diverse cultures contribute to a vibrant tapestry that enriches our society . Each tradition , language and practice tell a story , stories of resilience , creativity , and unity . In fostering unity through diversity , we must cultivate an environment where respect prevails ,’ she added . The governor urged traditional authorities to create platforms where traditions and knowledge are transferred down to the younger generation . ‘ As we embark on this week – long celebration of culture and community , let us commit ourselves to preserving what makes us uniquely Namibian . Let us foster pride in our identity by passing on tradition
s and knowledge to future generations so they too can appreciate their heritage ,’ she stressed . As part of Heritage Week on Wednesday and Thursday , the Keetmanshoop Municipality plans to have information sharing sessions on different cultural practices with primary and secondary school learners , respectively .
