Hlabisa Hands Over Emfuleni Sewer Upgrade to Boost Sanitation Services

Emfuleni: The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, has officially handed over a sewer infrastructure project aimed at improving the quality of life for residents in Emfuleni, Gauteng.

According to South African Government News Agency, the completion of the project marks a significant milestone, providing necessary relief to communities that have long faced sewer spillages and unsafe living conditions.

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs revealed that the bulk sewer line in the northern areas of Emfuleni had been poorly positioned for years, running through private properties and complicating maintenance. This led to persistent blockages and environmental issues affecting thousands of residents. The recent completion of a 2.1 km upgrade, costing R68.2 million, was funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) Schedule 6B and executed by the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA).

The project entailed the complete upgrading and rerouting of the main outfall sewer pipeline, providing engineers with better access for maintenance. The new system now directs sewage safely to the wastewater treatment plant, resolving long-standing health risks and restoring dignity to over 94,000 residents impacted by sewer overflows.

Minister Hlabisa commended MISA for its effective implementation and stressed the government's dedication to restoring community dignity through infrastructure. He urged residents to protect the new infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of proper maintenance and community ownership for future generations.

Hlabisa acknowledged other service delivery challenges, such as human settlements, electricity, clean water access, and economic opportunities, pledging continued collaboration with the municipality to address these issues. He also highlighted the potential benefits of South Africa's engagement with the Group of 20 (G20) in attracting investments for economic growth.

During a community engagement session, residents voiced various concerns, which the Minister welcomed, asserting the government's readiness to listen and act. He emphasized inclusive economic opportunities, ensuring no one is left behind.

The session concluded with community gratitude for the completed sewer project, despite ongoing concerns about other departmental issues. The Minister committed to returning to Emfuleni to update residents on progress, promising continued efforts to restore the community's well-being.
