Pretoria: The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), in collaboration with the University of Pretoria, the University of Zululand, and Sol Plaatje University, is set to host the 6th Annual Emerging and Established African Researcher Training Academy from 28 July to 1 August 2025. The event, which will be conducted virtually, will run daily from 8:30 am to 4 pm.
According to South African Government News Agency, this year's academy is themed 'Research excellence reimagined: Preparing tomorrow's scholars today', highlighting the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the research sector. The academy aims to explore how African scholars can adapt to AI's influence while reinforcing their foundational research skills.
The primary goal of the academy is to equip participants with skills in research design, data analysis, and academic writing, alongside introducing AI-integrated tools and techniques. Participants will be encouraged to address questions on maintaining intellectual authenticity while leveraging AI, understanding the balance between computational efficiency and human wisdom, and cultivating research skills that remain relevant as AI evolves.
Initially launched as an in-person program in collaboration with the University of Zululand, the academy transitioned to a virtual format in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift has enabled wider participation and collaboration across different institutions.
In alignment with its obligations to the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the HSRC emphasizes capacity building in research management and ensures inclusive training access for underrepresented groups, including women and persons with disabilities. It promotes lifelong learning among African scholars.
Dr. Bongiwe Mncwango, chairperson of the academy's organizing committee, stated that the academy strives to create a collaborative research environment, bringing together emerging and established scholars to share ideas, enhance research skills, and foster collaborative efforts. The program also supports career development for early-career researchers and highlights the significance of research in addressing African societal challenges.
Mncwango emphasized, "It is more than training - it's a strategic investment in the future of African research. As AI revolutionises scholarship, African researchers must be equipped to lead with innovation, integrity, and impact."
