India Identifies Key Areas for Deepened Cooperation with South Africa

Pretoria: India has identified infrastructure, critical minerals, and skills development as three key areas where South Africa can expect deeper cooperation over the next five years. Speaking ahead of the BRICS Summit, India's High Commissioner to South Africa, Shri Prabhat Kumar, highlighted the strong prospects for expanding economic cooperation, investment, and technical exchange between the two nations. According to South African Government News Agency, Kumar emphasized India's significant progress in digital public infrastructure, logistics, science, and technology. He pointed out that India's extensive railway network and well-developed ports could serve as a foundation for logistical cooperation with South Africa. Additionally, he noted India's interest in developing areas related to critical minerals, particularly those linked to renewable energy and semiconductors, as a potential area for collaboration. India is also focused on enhancing skills development initiatives in South Africa, with the Gand hi-Mandela Centre of Specialisation for Artisan Skills and a new skills development center in Majuba serving as examples. Kumar expressed India's willingness to cooperate with South African universities to exchange curricula and resources, better equipping students for the job market. Kumar stated that India's goal is to become a developed country by 2047 and sees South Africa as an important partner in achieving this vision. The cooperation is already evident in trade and investment, with mutual investments and improved market access for South African citrus exporters to India paving the way for further collaboration. In the digital realm, Kumar highlighted India's advancements in digital public infrastructure, which facilitates easier access to government services. He suggested that India's experience could offer valuable lessons for South Africa as both countries strive to improve service delivery and strengthen people-centered cooperation. The longstanding relationship between South Africa and India, g rounded in shared history and cultural ties, provides a solid foundation for advancing mutual goals. Kumar reiterated India's commitment to utilizing this relationship to further their strategic partnership established in 1997, advancing both nations' interests through South-South cooperation.
