Cape town: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) and the National Building Institute (NBI), the Infrastructure Technical Assistance Facility (ITAF), and Zutari at the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium South Africa (SIDSSA), currently underway in Cape Town. The MoU is part of efforts to enhance collaboration and support infrastructure projects in South Africa.
According to South African Government News Agency, the MoU aims to improve infrastructure delivery and foster investment in the country's development. Speaking at a media briefing, Head of Infrastructure South Africa Mameetsi Masemola said Infrastructure South Africa was officially established by the government in 2020 to provide a single point of coordination for the country's priority infrastructure pipeline. Masemola explained their mandate includes identifying and prioritizing strategic infrastructure and preparing and packaging projects to move them from concepts to bankability, thereby attracting public and private sector financing.
Masemola further detailed that Infrastructure South Africa is also responsible for coordinating the national pipeline of priority projects as strategic integrated projects and monitoring and reporting on projects. The MoU is seen as a significant step in enhancing infrastructure delivery.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson highlighted the importance of SIDSSA in bringing together government, project sponsors, investors, financiers, and technical professionals to transform commitments into viable infrastructure projects. He noted the attendance of seven African Ministers and nine African Mayors, marking the highest participation in the conference's six-year history. Macpherson also mentioned the involvement of seven Members of the Executive Council from South Africa's provinces and 13 mayors from metropolitan and regional areas, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the discussions.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to address the event, underlining the significance of the symposium. Macpherson stressed the need for credible project preparation, technical capability, and sustainable funding models to improve municipal infrastructure, which is crucial for service delivery and economic growth.
Prior to the signing of the MoU, Minister Macpherson and his delegation visited the Cape Flats Aquifer Recharge Project, a response to the Cape Town water crisis. The project involves a water treatment plant that recharges the aquifer through a series of filtration buildings. Zutari, a South African company, has played a key role in delivering infrastructure and advisory services in this project and across the Middle East for over two decades.
