Intelligence-driven operations result in the arrest of five suspects and the seizure of narcotics with an estimated value of R600 000 in Gauteng

Addressing crimes related to the possession of and dealing in drugs is a priority for the South African Police Service. The seizure of drugs to the value of R600 000 and arrest of five suspects today, is indicative of that commitment.

A team comprising of detectives from Organised Crime Investigations, Forensic Services and West Rand K9 unit arrested a suspect in Roodepoort earlier today, 30 September 2021; facing charges of possession of and dealing in drugs.

The police operationalised information received about suspected drug dealing in the area and proceeded to the identified location in Roodepoort; not far from two local schools. The members conducted a search of the premises and recovered various types of narcotics which include hydroponic dagga, dagga trees and edible narcotics. The estimated value of the drugs is R200 000. Police also recovered two toy guns.

Furthermore, a crocodile was also found on the premises. SPCA was called to handle the reptile.

In a separate incident, members of Gauteng Provincial Organised Crime Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at a complex in Dainfern where they recovered drugs suspects to be crystal meth to the estimated value of R400 000 and undisclosed amount of cash. Four suspects found at the premises, one man and three women, were arrested.

The suspects are expected to appear in the local magistrate court in due course, while further investigation is underway.

The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias has commended the collaboration of National Crime Intelligence, National Detectives and Forensic Services with the Provincial officers to ensure that drugs are taken off the streets of Gauteng.

“This successful arrest and seizure is huge leap in the direction of rooting out drugs in our society. It is imperative that community members report suspicious and criminal activities in their area to the police,” said Lieutenant General Mawela.
