Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Operating Safely After Power Reduction, Says Eskom

Stellenbosch: Koeberg Nuclear Power Station is operating safely following a temporary reduction in power output due to a fault on the 132kV transmission lines at the Pinotage transmission substation near Stellenbosch. The power utility, Eskom, reduced the station's two units from full power to 100MW each as a precautionary measure.

According to South African Government News Agency, Eskom confirmed that this reduction was an expected response designed to protect both the power station's integrity and the national grid. The utility clarified that both nuclear reactors at the station were unaffected by the incident. Furthermore, the National Nuclear Regulator has been informed of the situation.

The temporary reduction did not impact the stability of the power system. Eskom assured the public that there is no risk of loadshedding, thanks to adequate national generation reserves. The National Transmission Company South Africa has approved the increase in power output for both units at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.
