KZN Transport Inspects Damaged Roads and Houses Amid Persistent Downpours

KwaZulu-Natal: KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, has initiated a comprehensive inspection of roads and houses that have been destroyed due to the ongoing heavy rainfall in the province. The continuous downpours have caused significant damage to infrastructure, disrupting daily life in various parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

According to South African Government News Agency, the province has been grappling with relentless rainfall since the beginning of the year, leading to widespread damage. Communities have been sending numerous reports, including photos and videos, highlighting their struggles to access essential services such as schools, hospitals, and socio-economic centers due to the damaged infrastructure.

Duma emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that many bridges, especially in deep rural areas, have been eroded. This has severely impacted the ability of residents to reach necessary facilities. The ongoing rainfall has also stalled new construction projects and exacerbated the condition of roads undergoing repairs.

The department is committed to supporting affected communities by collaborating with other governmental bodies during this challenging period. The inspection began in KwaMakhutha, KwaNgcolosi, and Hillcrest, areas southwest of Durban, where efforts are being made to rehabilitate and repair damaged roads.

Duma and his team are focusing on accelerating their response despite the challenges posed by limited resources and recurring adverse weather conditions. The MEC plans to visit additional affected areas, including Vryheid, Empangeni, and Melmoth, in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal, to assess and address the damage caused by the heavy rainfall.
