Limpopo: At least 13 people have died following a collision involving a taxi and a bakkie on the R40 near Hoedspruit in Limpopo on Saturday. At least three others were transported to hospital with serious injuries.
According to South African Government News Agency, Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa expressed condolences to the families who lost loved ones during the incident. They stated that South Africa mourns and stands with the grieving families and also commends the emergency services, forensic teams, and law enforcement agencies for being responsive under such circumstances.
The officials further emphasized that this tragedy serves as a reminder of the need for road safety vigilance and responsible driving. They urged drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid distractions, never drive under the influence of alcohol, and ensure vehicles are roadworthy.
Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, expressed her shock and sadness over the incident. She extended her condolences to the families, next of kin, and the broader community who have lost loved ones, and wished a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Road Traffic Management Cooperation and other law enforcement authorities.
