Macpherson Welcomes IDT Board Appointments

Pretoria: Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dean Macpherson, has welcomed the appointment of five new trustees to the Independent Development Trust (IDT). The Minister emphasized the importance of this development by expressing the need for the newly complete board to convene urgently to elect a chairperson, ensuring optimal functioning of the agency, as highlighted in a statement by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI).

According to South African Government News Agency, the five newly appointed board members are Zimbini Hill, Jeffrey Mahachi, Raymond Nnaemeka Nkado, Nangamso Msuthukazi Matebese, and Bella Zoleka Mnanzana. These trustees join existing members Matodzi Ratshimbilani, Derek Naidoo, Mpilo Mbambisa, Lufuno Nevondwe, Karabo Siyila, and Prudence Mkhwanazi, completing a board that had lacked a quorum for a year and a half.

Minister Macpherson pointed out past allegations of corruption and governance issues within the IDT. The IDT is a Schedule 2 state-owned entity responsible for managing the implementation and delivery of crucial social infrastructure programs on behalf of the government. Macpherson noted efforts to restore governance stability and uncover the truth behind these allegations.

The Minister extended his best wishes to the board as they tackle the essential task of reforming the agency and restoring its role in delivering social infrastructure. He expressed anticipation for the completion of the PwC independent investigation into the controversial R800 million Oxygen Plant tender awarded by the IDT, hoping for accountability and potential criminal prosecution if necessary.

Macpherson reiterated the IDT’s significant role in transforming South Africa into a construction site, which would drive economic growth and create jobs. He stressed that transparency and accountability introduced at the department would enhance service delivery and contribute to building a better South Africa.
