Johannesburg: The Judicial Commission of Inquiry Into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, popularly known as the Madlanga Commission, is slated to resume its public hearings today after a recess that began on Thursday, 3 September 2026.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Commission will direct its attention towards the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) as part of its ongoing investigation. This marks a significant phase as the Commission delves into allegations of the JMPD's infiltration by criminal networks and the collusion between its officers and criminal syndicates.
The Madlanga Commission was established following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on 6 July 2025. These allegations involve criminality, political interference, and corruption within the broader criminal justice system. The Commission is mandated to submit its final report to President Cyril Ramaphosa by 16 November 2026, following an extension of the initial deadline which was set for the end of August.
The Commission has already provided two interim reports to President Ramaphosa, setting the stage for what is expected to be a comprehensive final report that will address these critical issues within the criminal justice framework.
