WESTERN CAPE In their effort to rid the communities of illegal firearms and fight the scourge of gangsterism, members attached to Major Offences Reaction Team arrested an 18 year old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
On Thursday, 18 April 2019 at about 23:45, members were patrolling in Howe Close, Elsies River area and attended to a complaint of a shooting incident in Clarke Estate. They saw a suspicious looking person running away as they approached the scene. The members gave chase and caught the suspect in possession of a 9mm Ruger firearm with, one magazine and nine rounds of ammunition. Further investigation shown that the firearm was reported as stolen in Somerset West in October 2009.
The suspect was detained on possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and he is due to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 23 April 2019 on the mentioned charges.
In an unrelated incident on Thursday, 18 April 2019 at about 04:15, Vredendal SAPS members received an anonymous tip off pertaining to a firearm that was sold to a person in Bazil February Street, Vredendal.
The members acted on the information and found a .38 Revolver in the possession of a 30 year old suspect. He was arrested on charges of possession of illegal firearm, and is due to appear in the Vredendal Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 23 April 2019.
