Man arrested for suspected illegal game meat possession

A man was arrested after he was allegedly found with the carcass of a hippopotamus in his possession at Katere village in the Kavango East Region on Friday.

The Namibian Police Force in a crime report on Sunday said the incident occurred around 18h00 and the man had no authorisation to have the game meat in his possession. He also could not account for why he had it in his possession.

The carcass worth N.dollars 100 000 was confiscated and the suspect arrested. He was expected to appear in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the police stated.

In a separate incident, 24-year-old Daniel Ananias died after he was allegedly severely assaulted at Ondobe in the Ohangwena Region on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital at Eenhana and later transferred to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. The deceased’s next of kin have been notified.

The suspect has been arrested and police investigations continue.

The police also reported that a five-month-old baby died suddenly at Outemba Wambijomnje village in the Otjozondjupa Region on Friday.

The baby, Elijah Potele, was taken to a caretaker as his mother had to travel to Windhoek for employment. According to the crime report, the caretaker reported that he cried a lot but did not appear to be sick. He died suddenly at home, the police said.

The body was taken to the Okakarara State Hospital for a post-mortem to be conducted.

Police investigations continue.
