Pretoria: The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has confirmed that it is utilizing alternative channels to continue providing essential marine, aviation, and severe weather services following a cyber security breach of its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems.
According to South African Government News Agency, the breach occurred on Sunday evening, prompting SAWS to temporarily shift its operations to maintain service continuity. SAWS Chief Executive Officer, Ishaam Abader, stated on Thursday that there has been no disruption in services. Weather updates for marine and aviation sectors are being sent through alternative channels, and daily forecasts are being regularly emailed to media outlets and Disaster Management Authorities.
Abader noted that forecasts are also being shared via social media platforms, as the organization’s website remains inaccessible. In response to the cyber-attack, a team of engineers and cybersecurity experts is working diligently to restore operations. Progress has been made with the restoration of SAWS email functionality and telephone system.
SAWS emphasized the critical nature of its services, which are vital for safeguarding lives and property from hazardous weather. The organization is taking the cyber-attack seriously and is committed to keeping the public informed of developments as they occur.
