Cape Town: Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has reiterated the government’s commitment to an energy transition that is inclusive for all during the G20 Energy Transitions Working Groups (ETWG) Technical Teams meeting. The Minister emphasized the importance of a transition that not only preserves jobs but also transforms workers’ prospects through reskilling and the creation of quality jobs.
According to South African Government News Agency, Ramokgopa stressed the need for a transition that expands opportunity and reflects principles of equality and sustainability. He highlighted that South Africa’s climate goals must be rooted in social consensus, ensuring that workers are integral to shaping the new energy landscape.
Ramokgopa described the transition as a ‘development project’ for developing economies, advocating for it to enable industrialization and job creation. He emphasized the global South’s need to move from vulnerability to resilience and from energy poverty to energy
sovereignty.
The Minister proposed practical frameworks for concessional finance, viewing African countries as partners in creating solutions for a global just transition. He affirmed Africa’s readiness to lead on terms that support sovereignty and industrial growth.
