Minister Malatsi Highlights the Growing Impact of Free Wi-Fi in South African Taxis

Johannesburg: The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, has outlined the critical need for all South Africans to have access to reliable internet connectivity. During his visit to the Randburg Taxi Rank in Johannesburg, he stressed that connectivity should be available at home, work, or while in transit to ensure South Africans can participate in the digital economy.

According to South African Government News Agency, the visit included representatives from Sebenza and the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO). Sebenza, a local company, offers Wi-Fi in taxis and has seen its user base increase from 5.3 million in 2024 to 7 million in 2025. This growth is reflected in 21 million recorded sessions in 2024 and an average user engagement time of 10-15 minutes.

Sebenza, with a presence in 8,500 taxis and buses, is expanding its services through a partnership with SANTACO. The partnership aims to deploy Wi-Fi in 50,000 taxis over the next two years. Minister Malatsi stated that initiatives like Sebenza's align with the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies' efforts to make connectivity affordable and bridge the digital divide.

Malatsi emphasized the importance of digital inclusion for empowering South Africans to engage in local and regional economies and participate globally. He noted that access to digital technologies is essential as they continue to transform the global economy. Initiatives like Sebenza's demonstrate progress in achieving the country's developmental goals.
