Minister of Planning and UK Minister for International Development Discuss Economic and Trade Relations

Cape Town: H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, engaged in an in-depth discussion with Baroness Jenny Chapman, the UK Minister of State for International Development, at the G20 Development Ministers Meeting in South Africa. The dialogue centered on enhancing economic, trade, and investment relations between Egypt and the UK, as well as joint efforts to reform global financial systems and United Nations mechanisms. The discussions also touched upon outcomes from the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville.

According to African Press Organization, the meeting highlighted the anticipated visit to Cairo by UK officials, which is expected to elevate Egyptian-British relations to a strategic partnership. This visit aligns with the strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union announced in 2024 and aims to broaden cooperation levels. Both ministers emphasized the importance of activating recommendations from international forums to create a more efficient financial architecture, particularly benefiting developing countries.

The ministers also explored collaborations through the Egyptian National Platform for Green Projects, notably the NWFE program, focusing on the nexus of water, food, and energy. Discussions included the UK's support for global climate initiatives through Climate Investment Funds and the Green Climate Fund, alongside the forthcoming Green Growth: Egypt-UK campaign, set to run until the COP30 Climate Conference to boost green economy partnerships.

Given the UK's status as a major investor in Egypt, particularly in energy, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods, the ministers acknowledged the pivotal role of the Egyptian-British Business Association and the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce in facilitating trade and investment. The 2024 Memorandum of Understanding between the Egyptian General Authority for Investment and Free Zones and UKEF was also recognized for strengthening these bilateral ties.

The British Minister lauded Egypt's efforts in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and delivering aid, expressing the UK's support for these initiatives. She underscored the need for a sustainable ceasefire to ensure the continuous and safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.
