Minister Reaffirms South Africa’s Position on Former Zambian President’s Burial

Pretoria: While a state funeral would be an appropriate tribute to the legacy of the late former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, South Africa has acknowledged the legal obligation to respect the wishes expressed by the former President’s immediate family for him to be laid to rest in South Africa.

According to South African Government News Agency, Minister Ronald Lamola reaffirmed that a state burial in Zambia would be the most fitting tribute to honor Former President Lungu’s legacy and service to the Zambian nation. However, he also recognized the legal obligation to respect the family’s wishes for a private burial in South Africa.

Last week, the family announced plans for a private ceremony in South Africa after a dispute with the Zambian government regarding a state funeral. Former President Lungu passed away on 5 June 2025 in a South African hospital after medical treatment.

Minister Lamola emphasized the government’s commitment to handling the situation with dignity and mutual respect, honoring the former President’s memory and the bonds between South Africa and Zambia. He conveyed President Ramaphosa’s condolences to Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and expressed solidarity with the Zambian government and people during this time.

The Minister assured Zambia of South Africa’s steadfast support during their period of mourning and reiterated the enduring friendship between the two nations.
