Mothotlung: Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane and the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, will on Friday hand over 397 title deeds to their rightful owners in Mothotlung. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the national title deed backlog and unlock significant asset value for government-subsidised housing.
According to South African Government News Agency, the handover event is a critical element in the Department of Human Settlements’ strategy to eliminate the backlog, which could potentially release over R200 billion in asset value for fully subsidised government houses countrywide. The North West province has outlined a target for the current financial year to deliver 6,718 title deeds, contributing to the national goal of 80,000 deeds by 2029.
To facilitate this initiative, the Minister and provincial MECs have relaunched the Title Deeds Fridays Campaign. This nationwide effort aims to engage all stakeholders in supporting the title deeds restoration programme, which seeks to restore dignity, enhance tenure security, and promote economic empowerment for beneficiaries.
The event will also see the participation of the Mayor of Madibeng Local Municipality, Douglas Maimane, and the Mayor of Bojanala District Municipality, Dikeledi Mthangeni, highlighting the collaborative effort between various government levels to support housing beneficiaries.
