Sandton: The Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, lauded the steadfast commitment of donor countries, the private sector, and philanthropic organizations during the Eighth Global Fund Replenishment Summit. These entities demonstrated the essence of multilateralism at the event.
According to South African Government News Agency, the summit was hosted by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB), and Malaria in Sandton, Johannesburg. It was co-organized with the governments of South Africa and the United Kingdom, coinciding with the G20 Leaders' Summit.
In a challenging geopolitical and economic climate, global partners pledged $11.34 billion to continue combating AIDS, TB, and malaria, aiming to save millions of lives and strengthen health systems worldwide.
Motsoaledi emphasized the importance of the investment case for replenishment, noting that since 2002, the Global Fund partnership has saved 70 million lives and reduced the combined death rate from HIV, TB, and malaria by 63%. He urged a unified approach across governments, civil society, and the private sector, stressing the interconnectedness of their fates.
Reflecting on the G20 Presidency's key theme-'Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability'-Motsoaledi highlighted the need for country-led solutions, enhanced domestic funding, and health sovereignty, noting South Africa's substantial funding for its HIV medicines.
He called for inclusive health service delivery, ensuring no one is left behind, especially vulnerable groups. Motsoaledi asserted that the summit's success would mark a lasting legacy of unwavering commitment to partnership and progress.
The summit saw participation from five Heads of State and Government and representatives from over 30 countries, alongside multilateral partners, philanthropic organizations, businesses, civil society, and community networks.
President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized Africa's leadership in global health, indicating the symbolic significance of hosting the summit in Africa for the first time. He highlighted Africa's role in driving innovation and taking responsibility for health systems, embodying solidarity, equity, and transformation.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer underscored the importance of investing in the Global Fund, asserting that it supports economic growth and stability and exemplifies a modern approach to development.
