National Police Commissioner Faces Charges Over R228 Million Contract

Pretoria: National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, has appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on four charges of contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

According to South African Government News Agency, Masemola is among at least 16 other co-accused, including alleged criminal mastermind Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, who are facing the court. The charges are related to the alleged irregular awarding of a contract valued at approximately R228 million to Medicare 24, a company owned by Matlala.

The Independent Directorate Against Corruption spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, stated that Masemola's case has been postponed to 13 May 2026. This postponement is to allow for further investigations and to join him with 16 others charged in the same matter. The case also involves charges of corruption, fraud, and money laundering against the accused.
