Tshwane:The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has confirmed that robust security measures are in place to safeguard the 2026 Local Government Elections in South Africa. Law enforcement agencies have been deployed nationwide to ensure a peaceful and secure electoral process.
According to South African Government News Agency, NATJOINTS Chairperson Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili stated that both national and provincial joint operational structures are fully operational. This readiness is based on interdepartmental planning and intelligence assessments, in collaboration with the Electoral Commission of South Africa and other stakeholders.
Mosikili emphasized that security arrangements are ready for all provinces, municipalities, districts, and policing precincts, with special focus on special voting. Security assessments have been conducted at voting stations, with deployments informed by threats and vulnerabilities.
The operational strategy is intelligence-led and supported by contingency plans. The South African National Defence Force is prepared to assist the police in hotspot areas if needed. The NATJOINTS Coordinating Centre will provide real-time monitoring and situational awareness.
Government has also ensured the continuity of essential services during elections, with the Department of Home Affairs aligning its operational hours with the IEC. Political parties are reminded that campaigning must end by midnight on the Tuesday before Voting Day, with no campaigning allowed on the day itself.
Since the election processes began, 139 dockets related to election-related crimes have been registered, resulting in 48 arrests. The South African Police Service has prioritized investigations, particularly regarding 20 murders linked to political activities.
Security assessments are ongoing to address potential threats from protests, community tensions, and other factors. NATJOINTS will conduct daily media briefings to communicate operational developments and updates on safety and security.
General Mosikili reiterated the importance of safeguarding democracy, urging collective efforts to ensure free, fair, and safe elections.
