New Leadership Appointed to Interim Traditional Health Practitioners Council

Pretoria: In a significant development for the traditional health sector, the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has officially announced the appointment of a new Chairperson and several members to the Interim Traditional Health Practitioners Council of South Africa (ITHPCSA).

According to South African Government News Agency, this move comes as part of efforts to enhance the representation of key stakeholders and strengthen the council’s framework, aligning with the provisions set out in the Traditional Health Practitioners Act, No. 22 of 2007. Taking the helm as Chairperson is Sheila Fihliwe Khama, who is poised to lead the council through its ongoing transformation and regulation initiatives.

Sarah Motha has been appointed in a herbalist category, Rapholo Joel Chauke in the diviner category, and Dr Morokolo Sathekge will represent the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). These appointments are effective immediately and will remain throughout the current term, which concludes on 26 April 2026.

Motsoaledi took the opportunity to express gratitude to Kenneth Mogoeng for his service as Acting Chairperson during the council’s recent vacancy. ‘His leadership and commitment during this transitional period are deeply acknowledged and appreciated,’ the statement read.

The newly appointed members are expected to play a vital role in professionalising and regulating the traditional health sector, which is essential for maintaining ethical standards and safeguarding public health in South Africa. The ITHPCSA plays a critical role in upholding ethical standards, protecting public health, and promoting the recognition and integration of traditional healing within South Africa’s broader healthcare system.

‘The council welcomes the appointees and looks forward to their contribution in advancing the mandate of the Council in service of the people of South Africa.’
