Newborn baby found alive at Otjiwarongo

A newborn baby girl was found alive next to a rubbish bin in Otjiwarongo’s Extension Six residential area on Wednesday.

The Namibian Police Force’s (NamPol) head of community affairs in the Otjozondjupa Region, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha in a media statement said the baby was found by a passerby around 10h42 on Wednesday.

‘The baby was found alive, wrapped in a blanket, and placed next to a rubbish bin which was taken outside the house that morning,’ said Mbeha.

Members of NamPol along with a social worker were informed of the incident and attended to the scene. The baby was taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital, where she is recovering under the care of some social workers, Mbeha said.

‘The suspect is not known at this stage, and we are calling on members of the public in Otjiwarongo who know of any woman who might have been pregnant but who does not have a baby to inform us,’ she said.

Police investigations into the matter continue.
