Mahikeng: Ahead of the memorial service to honour actor Presley ‘Cobrizi’ Chweneyagae, North West Acting Premier Kenetswe Mosenogi visited Ramosadi Village in Mahikeng this morning to express her condolences and support to the family of the award-winning actor.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Acting Premier was accompanied by the province’s MECs and the Executive Mayors of both the Mahikeng Local Municipality and the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality ahead of the memorial service taking place at the Mmabatho Convention Centre today.
The renowned actor passed away on 27 May 2025 at the age of 40. His uncle, Mzwakhe Sigudla, told the SABC that Presley had difficulty breathing at the time of his death.
Last week, Mosenogi stated that Chweneyagae was not only a talented actor but also a cultural icon, whose contributions to the country’s arts and entertainment landscape will be remembered for many years to come. ‘He was a proud product of the North West province. He honed his craft at Mmabana Mahikeng, where his passion for dramatic arts flourished.’
His remarkable performances in acclaimed works, such as the 2005 film Tsotsi, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, are well celebrated. He is also well-remembered for his unforgettable role as the beloved and complex character Cobra in DStv’s Mzansi Magic telenovela, ‘The River’, a performance that earned him a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Actor.
Recently, he became the Executive Producer for the show’s spin-off, Cobrizi, further solidifying his status as one of the most prolific figures in local entertainment. In addition, the actor has starred in classic productions such as ‘Hamlet’, ‘Julius Caesar’, and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. He also co-authored the acclaimed play ‘Relativity’ and later directed the award-winning production ‘Cell No. 4’, showcasing his versatility as a storyteller.
Mosenogi said this ‘tragic loss’ leaves a void in ‘our hearts’ and in the industry he loved so dearly. ‘As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the legacy of creativity and passion he gifted to us all. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time,’ Mosenogi added.
The Premier’s Office said the North West Provincial Government will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a dignified send-off for Chweneyagae, honouring his immense contributions to South Africa’s cultural and arts heritage. She encouraged everyone to cherish the memories and the impact that Chweneyagae made throughout his career and to support his family.
The Acting Premier extended her condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the renowned actor.
