Northern Cape Police Lead New Year Crime Prevention Operations in Kimberley

Kimberley: The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, alongside Frances Baard District Commissioner Major General Charlotte Makgari and other provincial heads, spearheaded extensive New Year crime prevention operations in Kimberley and its surrounding areas on December 31, 2024. The operations, part of a larger provincial initiative, targeted alcohol-related and contact crimes, property-related offenses, and the possession of dangerous weapons, resulting in the arrest of 72 suspects.

According to South African Police Service, the operations were carried out simultaneously across all five districts of the Northern Cape. Police efforts focused heavily on regulating liquor outlets and public gatherings, leading to the shutdown of three unlicensed liquor establishments and the confiscation of a substantial amount of alcohol. As part of these actions, authorities conducted vehicle checkpoints, roadblocks, and compliance inspections at local spaza shops and liquor outlets, with an emphasis on adherence to legally mandated closing times.

The coordinated police activity included stop-and-search operations that successfully led to the seizure of drugs and dangerous weapons. The police force, bolstered by newly appointed constables, ensured a significant presence on the ground, enhancing their capability to manage and prevent crime during the busy festive period.

Lieutenant General Otola praised the dedication of the police personnel, acknowledging their role in maintaining public safety and commended the community for their cooperation with law enforcement efforts. She emphasized that these proactive measures would continue beyond the holiday season to sustain a secure environment for the province’s residents.
