Pretoria:The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has recorded 51,474 applications during the first four days of the 2027 application cycle.
According to South African Government News Agency, these early figures underscore the scheme's vital role in facilitating access to higher education for South African students. The data reflects an increasing awareness of opportunities provided by government-funded financial aid.
Statistics reveal a headcount of 49,413 applicants, signaling thousands of students beginning their journey toward higher education in 2027. Of the applications since the cycle's opening on September 18, 2026, 43,297 were from first-time students and new applicants, and 6,865 from Further Education and Training applicants.
Additionally, 1,312 applications were from senior students seeking aid, with 12,625 applicants being beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency and 52 from students with disabilities.
NSFAS noted a significant number of female applicants, totaling 38,121 (74.06%), compared to 13,353 male applicants (25.94%). The majority are young individuals aged 18 to 29, indicating a strong demand for financial support among those progressing from secondary to post-school education.
NSFAS highlighted advancements in processing applications and commended the support from various stakeholders. The application period concludes on October 31, 2026, with no extension planned. Prospective applicants are urged to apply early and ensure all documentation and consent forms are correctly submitted to aid the verification process.
