The ‘Garden Town of Namibia’, home to some of the country’s former football greats, will host the second edition of the Okahandja Municipality mayoral cup this weekend.
Football, netball, volleyball, and darts teams will compete for top honours on Saturday and Sunday at the Nau-Aib Stadium in a tournament for which the Okahandja Municipality has allocated N.dollars 68 250 across all four categories.
Tournament coordinator Maggy Sheya told Nampa on Thursday that this the second time the games are held, and they expect a significant turnout.
‘The stage is set, and we are prepared to host all teams for the second time. Our registration deadline was Monday, but we had to extend it owing to high public demand, therefore we anticipate a large attendance,’ she said.
Sheya said the competition is open to all teams in the country, with no limits in place for any category, and that draws for all codes will take place on Friday to give travelling teams adequate time to attend the draw.
The registration fees are se
t at N.dollars 500 for the darts category; N.dollars 600 for volleyball teams; N.dollars 600 for netball; and N.dollars 1 800 for football.
The majority of the prize money has been allocated to the football category, where teams will compete for a whopping N.dollars 45 000, with netball and volleyball teams competing for N.dollars 10 000 each, and darts teams competing for N.dollars 3 250.
The football champions will receive N.dollars 20 000, the runners-up will receive N.dollars 15 000, and the semi-finalists will receive N.dollars 5 000 each. The winning netball and volleyball teams in their respective categories will get N.dollars 5 000, the runners-up N.dollars 3 000, and the third-placed teams N.dollars 2 000.
The darts champion will receive N.dollars 5 000, the runner-up will receive N.dollars 1 000, and the third-placed team will receive N.dollars 750.
The MPSH football team and the All Blacks netball team are the defending champions.
