Oshikoto Second Division title race goes down to the wire

WINDHOEK: The 2023-24 Oshikoto Regional Second Division Football League is nearing its completion, with some teams left with four games remaining and others, three.

The round 21 and 22 fixtures will determine the title and relegation outcomes.

This weekend, the league will continue with rounds 19 and 20, setting the stage for the final. Andreas Johannes, the league administrator, on Thursday confirmed the league matches that will pit title challenger Mama Love against relegation-threatened Soweto Chiefs on Saturday at the Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Stadium in Ondangwa. Safile will host Tsumeb-based Newcastle United at the same venue.

Meanwhile, Onathinge United will face Young Rangers at Onayena’s King Nehale Stadium, while Benfica and Nine Eleven will face off in a mid-table clash.

For Omandengu United to avoid relegation, they have to pick up vital points this weekend when they host second-placed Gerros Uri-Khob Football Academy.

Ondangwa United, the league leaders, will play Young Rangers at the Andimba T
oivo ya Toivo Stadium on Sunday, hoping to boost their title and promotion chances. With two victories and a draw for their remaining encounters, the Ondangwa lads are going to claim the title and be promoted to the Northeast First Division Football League.

Young United will face Benfica at home in Ondangwa in a game they must win to avoid relegation.

Omandengu United will put their capabilities to the test as relegation fears deepen when they face Soweto Chiefs in a relationship struggle, whereas Tsumeb-based club Gerros Uri-Khob will be looking for crucial points to keep Ondangwa United at bay when they visit Onathinge United at Onayena.

Mama Love faces a difficult challenge ahead of the final clash, and a victory over Nine Eleven is required if they are serious about taking the title.

With the title set for a heated confrontation next weekend, Ondangwa United lead the league standings with 41 points after 18 games, followed by Gerros Uri-Khob (2) and Mama Love (3), both on 34 points.

Newcastle United
are fourth with 33 points, followed by Nine Eleven (5) with 28 points and Benfica (6) with 23 points. Onathinge United (7) and Safile (8) are locked with 21 points each. Young Rangers rank eighth with 20 points.

Young United (10), Soweto Chiefs (11) and Omandengu United (12) are all involved in a fierce relegation battle.
