Outjo Secondary School (SS) maintained its academic dominance at the recent Kunene Regional Education Directorate annual award ceremony held at Ehomba Combined School, approximately 120 km outside Opuwo.
On Friday, Outjo SS’s outstanding 2023 academic achievements earned them the highest honours at the event, which recognises national examination achievements for both Senior Secondary Certificates and the Advanced Subsidiary. Outjo SS attained both the Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSCO) and the National Senior Secondary Certificate Advanced Subsidiary (NSSCAS) honours, securing 90 per cent of the awards. The school has maintained its status quo, achieving this distinction for the past three consecutive years.
Outjo SS received 37 individual and collective prizes, the most ever awarded to a single school in the Kunene region. The school received the best overall performing NSSCO and AS awards, as well as teacher awards for achieving 70 per cent or higher in better grades at both NSSCO and AS levels

July Schmidt and Upi Kapi shared the gold trophy for their outstanding overall performance in the NSSCO category last year, each scoring 35 points. Outjo’s OK Grocer awarded the top performers in both categories a prize of N.dollars 2 000.
Desteria Guriras received the best overall award in the AS category, which she shared with fellow student Macdonald Oaseb. They both received N.dollars 2 500 from Outjo’s OK Grocer.
Two Outjo SS teachers were also recognised for maintaining a perfect record in a variety of subjects at both the NSSCO and AS levels. Genevive Nghiyolwa won gold in Physical Science, and Mbomboro Ndinelago received gold for achieving a perfect score in Home Economics. They each received laptop computers as a reward for their efforts. In addition to these individual honours, Outjo won the bronze medal in the AS-level best-performing school category.
Other top-performing schools included Putuavanga Secondary School and Mureti High School, which won gold and silver, respectively. Kamanjab Com
bined School won gold in the NSSCO category.
Sophia Fredrieck, the region’s education director, attended the ceremony and urged participants to work together to enhance the region’s overall performance.
‘We have to work and find ways on how best we can work with less to achieve the best results and be the best-performing region,’ she advised.
Fredrieck also stated that, despite the region’s poor national performance last year, she was confident that there would be improvements this year while reflecting on those who received top accolades.
