Over 50 Drivers Arrested for Drunk Driving on South African Highways

Polokwane: National Traffic Police have arrested more than 50 drivers for allegedly being under the influence of alcohol on the N1, N11, and R101 in Polokwane. The arrests were made over the weekend during an operation that focused on the high traffic volumes of people traveling to religious pilgrimages and a cultural festival in Limpopo and the Free State, respectively.

According to South African Government News Agency, the operation also led to 163 minibuses being issued tickets for operating without licenses and subsequently being discontinued from their journeys. A total of 237 vehicles were taken off the roads for being unroadworthy and displaying mechanical defects.

Additionally, five motorists were arrested for attempting to bribe officers, and three others were apprehended for reckless and negligent driving. In a related crackdown in Gauteng, 384 minibus drivers were arrested for driving without valid driving licenses, as reported by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on Monday.
